REFLECTION ON TODAY’S READINGS - You are the Christ

God’s logic is not the same as that of man; He pictures the world differently and acts in a way that may seem bizarre to us. Unlike David and his successors who fought many successful battles with the sword, Jesus the Messiah whom for centuries the Jews expected to liberate them from their enemies and to gather them into a nation employs a new battle strategy. He becomes a lamb of sacrifice. He offers his back to be beaten, his beard to be plucked and his face to be spit on. In human logic we think that violence should be met with violence, evil with evil, and injustice with injustice, Jesus proves that things can be resolved differently. He absorbs with love and forgiveness the hatred and anger of his enemies and transforms it, thus putting an end to the circle of violence. Take up your cross and follow me implies that we imitate Jesus in responding to violence with love and forgiveness and compassion.
