REFLECTION ON TODAY’S READINGS - Mary: Our Model of Doing God’s Will

The solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary reminds us that Mary, after her earthly life, is assumed into heaven body and soul. For those who believe, the Feast of Assumption is an event of joy because it indicates our own assumption; for those who suffer, it gives hope because Mary who suffered much is rewarded by being assumed into heaven; for the unjust and the proud, Assumption is a strong warning because the Lord ‘scatters the proud’ and ‘brings down the powerful’. Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a grace as well as a privilege. We would do well to consider Assumption as a grace offered by God, accepted by Mary with great love, perseverance, sacrifice, and dedication. When the grace of God is accepted and nourished, it works wonders. In response to God’s grace, Mary becomes fully available at the service of the Lord. Another distinctive mark of Mary featured in the Gospel of today is that of gratitude; Mary magnifies the Lord for bestowing greatness upon her. What distinguishes Mary the most is a life which constantly looks towards heaven without ever forgetting the commitments of daily life. How she lived her earthly life shows us the pathways to real freedom. Mary is offered to us as a model of deep faith, and as disciples of her Son Jesus, we are called to learn from her example so that our lives too can be offered to God in gratitude just as Mary did, and for Him to do great things in the world through us. No doubt, it is a big challenge but our complete surrender to God’s will, like Mary, will pave the way for God’s goodness in the world. Are you willing to be a ‘sacred vessel’ like Mary that carries Jesus within and reflects him to the world?
