REFLECTION ON TODAY’S READINGS - The Spirit Blows Wherever it Wills!

The disciples in today’s gospel reading are worried about the fact that someone is exorcizing in Jesus’ name. They felt a sense of duty to stop the exorcist from continuing because he was not part of the group. It did not matter that the work of the kingdom was being discharged and those under captivity were being set free. Following them, and not Jesus had become the criterion of what should be permitted and what should be prevented. But Jesus had a different vision, hence his response “whoever is not against us is for us”. Unless the others inject values contrary to the values of God, we must learn to see everyone as a potential ally of the kingdom. We have no right to exclude anyone. The priority is the kingdom and those who make contributions to this kingdom by way of good works regardless of what denomination they belong to must be accepted. Let us be more generous to understand those who work for the kingdom of God. The first reading and the gospel teach us that the Spirit works through those who predispose themselves for God’s work and are thus his collaborators. However, the Spirit can also decide to work through those who are not within this close circle of collaborators! This is because the Spirit blows wherever it wills. Today’s gospel teaches us two important lessons: that no one can contain or control the Spirit of God and that we must not allow anything to come between us and our commitment to God. We are therefore challenged to predispose ourselves to the workings of the Spirit and rejoice when the Spirit decides to blow wherever it wills.

NOTES

For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation and Mission” - From Bishop Wayne Kirkpatrick: "There are three phases for this synod, the diocesan, national and international. Pope Francis will officially inaugurate the 26th Synod on Sunday, October 10, 2021. All dioceses throughout the world are invited to open the diocesan phase of the Synod on Sunday, October 17. This means we will offer a special Mass and hopefully commission the volunteers we need." Read Bishop Kirkpatrick's Pastoral Letter: https://www.antigonishdiocese.com/synod2021/
