REFLECTION ON TODAY’S READINGS - YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOUR AS YOURSELF The scribe asked Jesus what the greatest commandment was. He was right in asking because there existed hundreds of statutes and commandments. It was important for a law-abiding scribe to get the opinion of Jesus as to which commandment was to be given priority. Jesus here combines two distinct verses found in the Old Testament: Deuteronomy 6:4 – ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might’, and Leviticus 19:18 – ‘you shall love your neighbour as yourself’. For Jesus, the Love of God and the love of neighbour are inseparable actions, like two sides of the same coin. Loving God automatically leads one to love his neighbour who is a child of God. St John tells us: “If anyone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother or sister, he is a liar for he/she who does not love his brother/sister whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen” (1 John 4:20). The right relationship with God presupposes the right relationship with our brothers and sisters. Forgiving our brothers and sisters is a precondition for obtaining forgiveness from God. Jesus the High Priest who offered the one and ultimate sacrifice to God for our sake is our intercessor before God in our effort to love and serve God and neighbour.
