REFLECTION ON TODAY’S READINGS - The Power of Thanksgiving and being Grateful Kind deeds elicit gratitude. This is especially true when the deed is something we are not able to do for ourselves. In such a case, our gratitude entails praise for our benefactor. The First Reading and the Gospel make mention of the skin disease generalized by the term leprosy. Lepers had difficult times in the early Israelite as well as later Jewish societies. One can imagine the gratitude with which the lepers’ heart would fill if they were to get a human touch or a complete cure. Both Namaan in the First Reading and the Samaritan in the Gospel expresses this feeling of gratitude. Besides getting a physical cure, Namaan also receives spiritual healing. He is grateful not only for the cure but also for the revelation about the true God. A similar point is to be noted in the Gospel - the Samaritan’s act of falling at the feet of Jesus implies accepting him as Lord and Saviour. One can be grateful to someone with four inner dispositions: the first disposition is a sense of duty or obligation. The relationship between the two ends when the obligation is fulfilled. The second disposition is selfishness. One continues to relate and thank the other as a provision for the favours needed in the future. The third disposition is love. Children are grateful to their parents and students are grateful to their teachers out of love. The fourth way is to be eternally grateful. One likes to remain indebted to the other for a lifetime. Such a relationship of gratitude never ends with obligations fulfilled. It continues forever. Namaan and the Samaritan are ever grateful to God. With what disposition am I grateful to God?

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL! - It is fitting for God’s people to offer public thanks for all the gifts we have received. The bountiful produce of the earth is a visible sign of the many blessings God want to shower on us through Christ. Our God also wants us to share the goods of the earth with all people. What are you most grateful for??
