REFLECTION ON TODAY’S READINGS - Salt and Light of the World

Light is such a powerful thing, no wonder it was the very first thing that God created (cf. Gn. 1:3-5). Having created light, God separated the light from the darkness. He called the light day, and darkness, night. Without light, when darkness comes, there is fear and terror but when light appears, there is joy and peace. Jesus himself is the Light of the world, as we read in John 1:4-5: “In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” At our baptism, we receive a lighted candle, which means that we participate really and truly in the Light of Christ.

Today’s Gospel says: “You are the light of the world; a city set on a hilltop cannot be hidden.” This is then a call to try our best to be light. We should strive to show a good example; be good citizens of our country; be good sons and daughters of the Church; be of good behaviour. Avoid deeds of darkness such as injustice, lies, dishonesty, divisive practices, unhealthy competition, and immoral behaviour. Our life has to say who we are through our habits of love, honesty, and generosity. By this, our light will shine out to all people of goodwill, so that our good works will glorify God.

The symbol of light is more profound and yet easier to grasp. True, Jesus is the Light of the world. Our faith in Jesus empowers us to be light in our own ways. We become light when we begin to live for others. Light is meant to be looked at; not meant to be covered and treasured like some precious object. It is to spread enabling people to see what is around them so that they would be able to walk safely. We become light when in the midst of the world, we stand up to give others a very important service: the service of example. This is what most people in the world look for: someone who would show them the right path, a beacon, a loving witness to the Gospel values of Jesus.
