- Canso - 6:00 PM ***
COUNTDOWN TO LENT - Ash Wednesday is fast approaching!! Ash Wednesday is a universal day of fasting and abstinence from meat. Lent begins February 22. Sunday, February 19 will be the last Sunday that the assembly sings “Alleluia” until the Easter Vigil. “Alleluia” is not sung in any hymn or text during the Season of Lent. The main Lenten works are prayer, penance and fasting and almsgiving and we are called to practice these during Lent and throughout the year. Lent is a time of repentance, change of heart and additional prayer.
REFLECTION ON TODAY’S READINGS - Our Decisions of Life
The choices we make in life either make or mar us. The first reading from the Book of Sirach is very blunt on this: “If you will, you keep the commandments they will save you.” Nothing aligns us with God more than his commandments because in them we see what is God’s will for our lives. When we keep his commandments faithfully, we become his friends, but when we do not, we make ourselves God’s enemies. The greatest commandment that God gave us is the commandment of love. The scripture is full of instances of the call to love, and part of this call is to relate well with the people around us and to treat people well.
Jesus’ denunciation of the Pharisees and Scribes was based on the dichotomy that existed between what they taught and what their lives were. Our life should reflect what we teach. Jesus reminds us to be respectful to people; to be channels of mercy through reconciliation; to maintain a chaste living and to be truthful by making every effort to see that our spoken words are nothing but the truth. God is love and our loving response to his love is what saves us.
