REFLECTION ON TODAY’S READINGS - A Lesson from John the Baptist - This Sunday’s readings articulate the role of every baptized Christian in this world. In the First Reading the Israelites are called to be the light to the Gentiles, a theme which will be further explained in the First Reading of next Sunday. While in the Babylonian exile, the Israelites were confused about their identity as the chosen people of Yahweh, Isaiah affirms their privileged position in the eyes of God. While God takes delight in His chosen people, he also demands that they should contribute their mite in being the light to the Gentiles. In the Second Reading St. Paul, the chosen vessel of the Lord, verbalizes his mission as ‘taking the name of Jesus to all’. This Apostle to the Gentiles fought the good fight till the end for the spread of the Good News, a mission of every baptized Christian. The Gospel makes a distinction between the baptism of John with water and the baptism of Jesus with the Holy Spirit. The first indicates the cleansing of past sins; the second inaugurates a new life in the Holy Spirit. While Jesus was accepting the baptism of water, he inaugurated the baptism of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit descended upon him like a dove. What difference do I experience because I am a baptized Christian? What role am I called to play in today’s world as a temple of the Holy Spirit?

Burying the Dead and Grieving Well: The new practices concerning the treatment of the bodies of the departed have direct consequences on the way we live out our grief. They also influence our ability to embark upon a path of healing after the loss we have experienced. The Catholic Bishops of Canada offer this guide to dealing with death and the various forms of bodily disposition, as well as the Catholic liturgical and pastoral practices that accompany the grieving process. It is hoped to be useful for families and friends dealing with the loss of a loved one, for pastors and those who welcome and accompany the bereaved, as well as for those in the funeral industry who take the religious dimension into account.
