REFLECTION ON TODAY’S READINGS - Our Need for Salvation

All the readings of today’s liturgy speak of Jesus as the universal Savior. In Isaiah, he is foreshadowed as the light to the Gentiles, a theme that comes up again in today’s Gospel. Just as the suffering community of the Israelites was called to be a witness of God’s power to the Gentiles, Jesus’ ministry would become the living testimony of God’s power to the world. Such power is dimmed because of the divisions in the community. Hence St Paul confronts the Corinthians for their narrow-mindedness and divisions in the community. Some of the Corinthians would boast of their sense of belonging to Paul, some others to Apollos, some to Cephas (Peter), and still some to Christ. This attitude would go against their mission of becoming light to the Gentiles. Matthew’s community was a combination of Jewish and Gentile Christians and was prone to such danger. By placing Jesus’ Galilean ministry (Note, Galilee is called ‘Galilee of the Gentiles!’) at the very outset of his Gospel Matthew clarifies Jesus impartial attitude towards the Jews as well as the Gentiles. How can I become light to the people of other faith? What kind of division can be a block in being a witness of God’s power to them? In this regard what do I learn from the approaches of the prophet Isaiah, the Apostle Paul, and Jesus Christ?

Burying the Dead and Grieving Well: The new practices concerning the treatment of the bodies of the departed have direct consequences on the way we live out our grief. They also influence our ability to embark upon a path of healing after the loss we have experienced. The Catholic Bishops of Canada offer this guide to dealing with death and the various forms of bodily disposition, as well as the Catholic liturgical and pastoral practices that accompany the grieving process. It is hoped to be useful for families and friends dealing with the loss of a loved one, for pastors and those who welcome and accompany the bereaved, as well as for those in the funeral industry who take the religious dimension into account.
