REFLECTION ON TODAY’S READINGS -
The Beatitudes – The Roadmap for All Christians
In the Sermon on the Mount, the teachings of Jesus radically contradict our usual way of thinking. The Beatitudes shock our sensibilities. The Beatitudes are the nucleus of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. The eight Beatitudes have a precedent in the Book of Zephaniah. Zephaniah exhorts people to seek righteousness and humility. As presented by Jesus, the Beatitudes are a declaration of blessedness. Jesus identifies the people who will receive divine blessings. They are: the poor in spirit, those with heavy hearts, the humble, those who thirst for righteousness, the merciful, those pure in heart, the peace-makers, and the persecuted. Jesus says that God will care for the people who have these attitudes. The world has progressed, but people’s suffering has increased. Abundance will not eliminate want and need. For this reason, we need to trust in God. When needy, we must cry out to God, who will definitely come to our assistance. Jesus stands as the Guarantor for this. ྭJesus presents the Beatitudes as the way of life in the kingdom he has inaugurated. He challenges to stop seeing the world according to the logic of power. Power, human power, cannot inherit the kingdom of God.

NOTES
Burying the Dead and Grieving Well: The new practices concerning the treatment of the bodies of the departed have direct consequences on the way we live out our grief. They also influence our ability to embark upon a path of healing after the loss we have experienced. The Catholic Bishops of Canada offer this guide to dealing with death and the various forms of bodily disposition, as well as the Catholic liturgical and pastoral practices that accompany the grieving process. It is hoped to be useful for families and friends dealing with the loss of a loved one, for pastors and those who welcome and accompany the bereaved, as well as for those in the funeral industry who take the religious dimension into account.
